About me

I work as Associate Professor of digital culture and cultural studies at the Institute of Audiovisual Arts of Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. The website is meant to document most of my academic, artistic and social activities. As an academic, I teach (mostly graduates), research (if I’m lucky to spare some time from vast academic bureaucracies), publish (which increasingly requires a good deal of effort) and edit (I serve as an Editor-in-Chief of Polish peer-review journal Arts & Cultural Studies Review / Przegląd Kulturoznawczy and as a Managing Editor for EBR – electronic book review).

Between 2020 and 2024 I gladly served as a member of the Board of Directors of Electronic Literature Organization.

Since 1998 I’ve been pursuing my creative practice, mostly as a co-initiator of the Magic Carpathians Project. I’ve also done a few solo projects, mostly in field recordings (as documented elsewhere). Currently, I’m shifting more into sound art and digital art, with a few projects already completed, others either brewing or being work-in-progress. More details under “artist” tab.

I’m also an avid permaculture gardener. Eight years ago, together with my husband, Marek Styczynski, we purchased a small property in Pieniny mountains, an absolutely marvellous corner of Slovak-Polish borderland. The region is called Zamagurie (in Slovak). Our land is located in a small village Lechnica on the Slovak side of the border inhabited by 240 people. Since 2015 we’ve been working on transforming this spot into a rich habitat, designed according to the principles of permaculture. Our goal is to get the fully functioning food forest. We’re getting closer to our goal every year. We also organize a small-scale permaculture workshops and study visits for those who want to learn more about regenerative work with land. I spend non-teaching part of my weeks here. We called this place Biotope Lechnica / Biotop Lechnica. More details under “ecofeminist” tab.

I’m also a Zen practitioner with The Zen Garland Order, with centres located in the US (in Minnesota and Georgia), Europe (Germany), and soon in the Republic of South Africa.
